Master Prompt
This Master Prompt Guide is Provided by DTC Inc. | Beginner Guide | Version 1.0 | September 2026
Every time you open a new AI tool, it meets you as a stranger. A master prompt is your ready-made introduction: write it once, paste it anywhere, and skip the "let me tell you about myself" part forever.
🤔 What Is a Master Prompt?
A master prompt is a short, reusable text (about one page or less) that tells an AI who you are, what you do, and how you like to be helped. Think of it as your AI business card.
- It's written once and reused in any AI tool (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and others).
- It's written in first person, e.g., "I'm a project manager who prefers short answers in bullet points."
- It comes in two flavors: a Personal one (your life outside work) and a Professional one (your role and work style).
- It's a living document. You update it as your life, job and goals change.
🎯 What Is It Used For?
Without a master prompt, AI gives generic answers because it doesn't know you. With one, answers fit you from the very first message.
| Situation | How your master prompt helps |
|---|---|
| Trying a new AI tool | Paste it in the first chat and the tool "knows" you in seconds. |
| Setting up an app | Paste it into Custom Instructions, Personalization or Project Instructions so it applies to every chat. |
| Starting a new project | Add it to the project so every conversation starts with context. |
| Getting better answers | AI matches your tone, level of detail and preferred format (bullets, tables, steps). |
| Saving time | No more re-explaining your job, goals or preferences in every chat. |
Personal vs. Professional at a glance:
| 🏡 Personal Master Prompt | 💼 Professional Master Prompt |
|---|---|
| Hobbies, interests, goals, values, life stage, how you like to learn | Role, industry, responsibilities, tools, audience, priorities, writing style |
| Use it for: meal plans, travel, learning, journaling, budgeting, hobbies | Use it for: emails, reports, meetings, planning, research, presentations |
🏡 Create Your Personal Master Prompt in 5 Steps

I want to create my Personal Master Prompt: a short, reusable introduction I can paste into any new AI tool so it understands who I am outside of work.
Please interview me. Ask me ONE question at a time, wait for my answer, and keep your tone friendly and simple. Cover these areas:
1. Basics: my name, what I like to be called, my city/time zone and languages
2. Life snapshot: my stage of life, household and pets (only what I choose to share)
3. Interests: hobbies, favorite topics, things I'm learning or curious about
4. Goals: what I want to achieve this year (learning, health, travel, creativity, finances, etc.)
5. Values: what matters most to me
6. Communication style: how I want AI to talk to me (tone, length, bullets vs. paragraphs, level of detail)
7. Things to avoid: tones, topics or habits that annoy me
8. How I plan to use AI in my personal life
Rules:
- If I say "pass," skip that question.
- Remind me not to share passwords, account numbers or other sensitive details.
- When we're done, write my Personal Master Prompt in first person, under 300 words, with short headings and bullet points.
- Then ask if I want to change anything, and give me a one-sentence "mini version" for quick chats.
💼 Create Your Professional Master Prompt in 5 Steps
- Open the AI tool you use for work (preferably the one approved by your company).
- Copy the prompt below and paste it into a new chat.
- Answer the questions one at a time. Describe your company and clients in general terms only.
- Review and refine. Make sure it sounds like how you actually work.
- Save it in a work document titled "My Professional Master Prompt."
💬 Copy this prompt:
I want to create my Professional Master Prompt: a short, reusable introduction I can paste into any new AI tool so it understands my role and how I work.
Please interview me. Ask me ONE question at a time, wait for my answer, and keep it simple and practical. Cover these areas:
1. Role: my job title, department and how long I've been in this role
2. Company: my industry and what my company does (in general terms)
3. Responsibilities: my main tasks and what a typical week looks like
4. People: who I work with and who I communicate with (team, leadership, clients, vendors)
5. Tools: the software and platforms I use every day
6. Skills: what I'm strong at and where I'd like extra support
7. Priorities: my current goals or focus areas (no confidential details)
8. Writing style: my preferred tone, the voice of my company and the formats I use most (emails, reports, slides, checklists)
9. AI help: the tasks where I want AI to help me most
10. Boundaries: what AI should never do or assume in my work
Rules:
- If I say "pass," skip that question.
- Remind me not to share confidential client data, passwords or internal financial information.
- When we're done, write my Professional Master Prompt in first person, under 400 words, with short headings and bullet points.
- Then ask if I want to change anything, suggest 3 ways AI could save me time in my role, and give me a one-sentence "mini version" for quick chats.
🚀 Put Your Master Prompts to Work
- New tool? Paste your master prompt as the very first message, then ask your question.
- Set it and forget it. Paste it into the app's Custom Instructions, Personalization or Project Instructions settings so it's always on.
- Mix and match. Use the Personal one for home, the Professional one for work, or both when it helps (e.g., planning a work trip around your hobbies).
- Test drive it. After pasting, ask: "In 3 bullets, tell me what you understand about me and what you'd still need to know."
- Keep it fresh. Every few months (or after a new job, goal or big life change), paste it and ask: "Ask me 3 questions to update this master prompt."
🌱 Tips for Success
- Short beats long. A focused page works better than a life story.
- Be specific. "I prefer 5 bullet points max" helps more than "keep it short."
- Protect your privacy. Never include passwords, account numbers, health details you don't want stored or other people's private info.
- Follow company rules. Only use work details in AI tools your company allows.
- Keep your own copy. Your master prompt belongs to you, not to any single AI tool.
💡 Introduce yourself once. Let every AI tool start where the last one left off.
