Veeam Server Jobs Fail in Seconds — Outdated Data Mover / Host Rescan Required

Last Updated October 2026
Applies To Veeam B&R 13.1.1.18 BDRs backing up Hyper-V hosts

Signal

  • veeamServerLocalBackupsFailed is checked, often on many BDRs at once, straight after an upgrade or patch.
  • The job session fails within 8–16 seconds, before any data moves.
  • The session reads "host rescan is required", or "Server <host> has an outdated Data Mover service version".
  • "Unknown invoker method" in a job log is the same family: a version mismatch between the host's components and the backup server (Veeam KB3029).

Cause

After the BDR is upgraded or patched, the backup server is newer than the Veeam components on its managed Hyper-V hosts: Data Mover, Installer Service, Guest Interaction Proxy and Hyper-V Integration. Veeam refuses to run jobs against an out-of-date host.

This hit roughly 70 sites after the 13.1.1.18 patch wave on 2026-09-23.

Fix

  1. Run the NinjaOne script Veeam Update Managed Host Components on the BDR. It runs as SYSTEM with no variables, and is safe to run repeatedly — a host that's already current is left alone.
  2. Read its output:
    • Managed hosts: N; out of date: M — M is how many hosts needed it.
    • UPGRADED <host> for each host fixed, about 26 seconds each.
    • FAILED names any host it couldn't update.
  3. Re-run the failed job, or wait for the next scheduled run.

The v13 upgrade script runs the same check on every run, so an upgraded BDR normally fixes its own hosts. Use this page when a host was missed or added later.

If the script reports FAILED

In the Veeam console, open Backup Infrastructure → Managed Servers, right-click the host, and choose Upgrade. If it fails there too, the BDR can't reach the host's Veeam services. Check, in order:

  1. Ports 6160 and 6162 from the BDR to the host — Veeam BDR Firewall Rules.
  2. LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy on a workgroup host — Local account token filter policy.
  3. The credentials stored for the host in Veeam.

Verify

  • The job completes and moves data.
  • Managed Servers no longer prompts to upgrade the host.
  • veeamServerLocalBackupsFailed clears on the next veeam-inventory run.
